Ramble On

Shop shot of Terrapin Stationers notecards and Juniper Ridge soaps. Terrapin’s a family run business since 1913 and one of the few engraved stationery companies still operating in the US. Juniper Ridge started at the farmers market in Berkeley in 1988 and wildcraft all of their apothecary from the mountains and deserts of the west. They donate 10 percent of their profits to preserving the western wilderness.

Many of you already know the story of our little shop, but for those of you who don’t I’ll keep it brief. We [meaning my mom Molly, my man Foster, and myself] opened TGS almost two years ago in the small, suburban town of Paoli. Although there were many different reasons and decisions that brought us to where we were, the notion that we could come together as a family and introduce not only a new retail environment but also new ideas and ways of thinking about consuming, was a headlining factor. We wanted the shop to be about quality products and down to earth service, a place where we could share our enthusiasm about our surroundings and the opportunities living in Pennsylvania can afford you [if taken advantage of properly.] We wanted people to feel welcome in our space, our home really… and with their support [and yours, those of you who are reading this ramble now] we’ve been able to support others. Though we may be small in the grand scheme of things, and at times, spread a little thin, the fact that we are an independent business has given us the freedom to speak openly and buy freely. We’ve been able to express ourselves without having to keep pulse on the “on trend”, without having to keep up with the jones’ so to speak. Which brings me to the reason I sat down to write this…

For us, buying American made products is not a tag line we exploit to appeal to customers. Supporting small, artisanal, and independent business isn’t a stylized gimmick. These are actually things we believe in, friends that we’re supporting, and chances for us to share the spirit of American craftsmanship and care that still exists today. Its an opportunity we’ve yet to take for granted and so we encourage you to continue to think locally, shop small, and support people who actually give a shit.
