Let’s Talk Art/Music – New York City Tompkins Square Park

In a little park on the Lower East side of New York City, my mother used to take me every Sunday to watch the local men and sometimes women get together to form what is called a Drum Circle. The Conga is a part of many cultures, and in this particular video I’m almost positive this creative free-style is based off  of a style called Rumba, stemmin from deep Cuban roots. The rhythm is played on a 4/4 scale kept together by the gentleman with the two stick like pieces in his hand called a Clave. As I grew up I was lucky to have watched these same men grow older and more and more skilled at what they do- I have had the chance to photograph them, talk and share cafe with them, and, best of all, play with them… Playing everything from Jazz, Afro Cuban and Salsa. The video below is as close to the New York I know and grew up with. Please enjoy it! And if by chance you find yourself in the Lower East Side of Manhattan on a nice warm Sunday, take a stroll through Tompkins Square Park. These particular gentleman tend to stay close to the 7th Street and Ave B entrance in the center of the park. Enjoy, Foster
