Beautiful hand-crafted pieces from the BLUMA PROJECT have just arrived at the shop. A fair-trade, global, cooperative, Bluma project works directly with women in Africa, whose on site creations earn them a sustainable wage and, essentially, a greater sense of independence. The colorful and textured pieces, constructed out of varying woods, fabrics, and glasses, are also insanely beautiful… Conscious consumerism at its best. Here’s a peak at where Bluma project is currently working:
Rwanda: Bluma project employs women to support themselves toward their own rise in life and spirit by continual education and empowerment. bluma project first worked with women in the Kigali cooperatives to reinvent their local paper beads by adding vibrant signature colors, intended to reflect the energy and strength inherent in Rwandan culture. Through their training in jewelry making, women in these cooperatives now evolve with each season’s exciting design challenges.
Ghana: Intricately designed glass beads, once used for trading and ceremony, are still handcrafted by artisans locally in rural Ghana. bluma project works with women in Accra to transform these beautiful indigenous beads into vibrant bluma necklaces with unique designs and variations. These women have been able to develop their skill sets to increasingly take on complex designs far beyond the local craft and into the world market.
